A work deadline. Missed sleep. A big date. There are numerous triggers that cause anxiety, stress and unease. Anxiety and panic attacks are episodic events induced by fear or anticipation of a real, expected, or imagined event that is considered threatening. These events can lead to a stress response by the body in an attempt to help prepare the individual for a “flight or fight” reaction.  The heightened sense of alertness for most who experience anxiety only exacerbates the anxiety or panic, which can keep you in a panic state. At the heart of the physiological symptoms associated with anxiety and panic is a fundamental state of hyper-excitability, which even occurs at the cellular level.

Cannabis has been shown to help mitigate hyper-excitability of cells which in turn may be part of the reason that cannabis can be effective at alleviating anxiety and panic.  Addressing anxiety with cannabis requires identifying cannabinoids or a formulation that can trigger an appropriate response. Sativas, for instance, have been known to induce more anxiety or panic in individuals. Therefore, cannabinoids that exhibit little to no psychoactivity may be more appropriate. Cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidiol (CBD) are formulated to ease mental and physical stress and Delta-8 THC relaxes both the body and mind.

What to do if you get too high – Ask a scientist.

The cannabis products you consume can determine how soon the effects will kick in, but it’s almost always advisable to start low and go slow. If you find yourself feeling a little too high, there are a few things you can do.

We partnered with Leafly to create an episode of “Ask a Scientist,” where LEVEL founder Chris Emerson, Ph.D. sits down with Leafly’s Jeremiah Wilhelm to talk about how to dose cannabis, as well as ways to counteract a cannabis experience that’s too intense. Click below to learn what Jeremiah does when he gets too high, CBD’s role in mitigating the effects of THC, and more.

ASK A SCIENTIST: Sex + Cannabis 101

When combining sex and cannabis, picking the right strain is important. If the effects are too heady, it might be difficult to enjoy the moment. Too sedating, and it might be hard to stay awake.

We partnered with Leafly to create this episode of “Ask a Scientist,” where LEVEL founder Chris Emerson, Ph.D. sits down with Leafly’s Jeremiah Wilhelm to talk about sex and cannabis. Remedy 3:1 on Leafly

Level sits in great company in Leafly’s “PAX Era pods to get excited about” review, featuring the LEVEL REMEDY 3:1.

“If you haven’t heard of Level you should look them up ASAP. A California-based brand with an eye on the medical side of things, they’re one of the few producers to make CBD rich PAX pods. In this case, it’s Remedy 3:1 CBD to THC blend. Specifically designed to deliver a mild high for easing pain and promoting sleep, the high CBD content makes it worth every penny (if you’re lucky enough to live in California).”

The ECS.  The endocannabinoid system, a buzzword in this new era of cannabis.  In the last Notes posting, we touched on the ECS briefly. Let us dive a bit deeper into the essence of what it is.  There is a significant amount of information available around the ECS and how cannabis interacts with it… let’s dive deeper.

In general, there are two known cannabinoid receptors in the ECS.  These are the CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are mainly found in the CNS (central nervous system).  CB2 receptors are mainly found in the PNS (peripheral nervous system) and immune systems. There are several different cannabinoid classes, but we will only highlight two of them here: endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids.  Endocannabinoids (anadamide, 2-AG) are produced endogenously (within the body) and function within the ECS. Phytocannabinoids (THC and CBD) are produced by the plant, Cannabis sativa, and also function within the ECS, plus a multitude of other physiological systems.

The ECS operates through a mechanism called retrograde signalling.  This is a fairly unique mode of communication in the human body. Only a few physiological processes use this method of signalling.  It is, however, fascinating. In short, the ECS functions as a feedback loop, sending information “upstream” to help modulate or control the ensuing “downstream” processes.  Through this mechanism the ECS is able to help bring the body into homeostasis or a balanced state.

The ECS is phylogenetically ancient.  It evolved around 600 million years ago.  It is present in every animal on the planet, except for insects.  In humans, the ECS touches on many foundational physiological systems: reproductive, immune, nervous, pulmonary, and digestive to name a few.  Look for future posts in which we will try and tease out the nuance of this amazing, complicated, and awe inspiring system. We hope you that you come to to be love the ECS as much as we do.  Enjoy.
